Advertising for Law Firms

Are you a member of "the fellowship of the doers." Teddy Roosevelt

In advertising and in the world of advertising for law firms, things have changed. The world of advertising has changed.

One of the best advertising for law firms opportunities is the internet. However, the greatest value and function will only come from building a website yourself. You will have to get your hands dirty and actually be a part of the research and development of your own law firm web site for it to get the best traffic.

If you do build based on current marketing trends, you will be poised for truly remarkable growth. This is the only way using website in advertising for law firms can truly be effective.

Before looking at how this can be, consider this question? Would you hire a stranger to build your law practice? Would you pay him thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, providing little guidance and let him loose building your law practice?

Does that sound absurd?

Every time a law firm pays a computer guru to build a website, they are throwing good money after a very expensive advertising medium that may be ineffective or bring very little return on investment.

The web site does give a web presence. However, it does not effectively nor can it build a relationship with and attract your specific market to your firm. Why?

Advertising for Law Firms with Websites

Imagine a bill board. It is beautifully conceived and designed. It has in big bold letters, and it says...

The (Insert Your Name Here) Law Firm
Here is the problem. How many people are looking for the billboard. Obviously people who know about the billboard will drive right up to it and say, what a beautiful bill board.

What about everyone else.

The problem is that the bill board (read: Your Website) is in the middle of a corn field in the middle of Kansas. Nobody driving down the information highway will eve see it unless they specifically drive up to it.

Unfortunately, marketing in the world wide web requires that we no longer live in Kansas.

Success will require having your billboard (read: your website) on an 8 lane stretch of the information highway.

Advertising for law firms using the world wide web requires the use of search terms or keywords. This means that you need to build your website around the keywords that people are searching for and are congruent with your mission and vision.

What are the keywords? They are so nuance, that the only way to effectively capture all of them would be for you to take a proactive approach, learning how to build a website and actually do the market research.

Before you get scared off here, know this. If you can write a letter and if you can send an e-mail, you can build a successful internet based business. Yes, website advertising for law firms that will help you build your practice.

No need to learn geek or any other computer languages. It is that simple, if you use the tools we recommend. Prefer having a coach or even taking a class. We can do that too. Our class is the same as taught in colleges from Anchorage to Zimbabwe. You can find this class at the Citadel and at Penn State, to name a few.

For less than a hundred hours, you can save tens of thousands of dollars.

Remember, the difference between one single word could mean the difference between getting one new client a month.

Building a business both in the brick and mortar world and in the virtual world, will make possible being able to capture an entirely new market.

This is because of the way marketing and markets have changed.

In a Harris Poll, the question was explored as to why some companies are widely trusted, and others are not.

The website played an important part in this process.

The poll outlined five areas of trust.

  • Personal Experience
  • Organizational Knowledge
  • Deference (the trust people have in general)
  • Reference (what is learned from others)
  • Glitz (advertising, packaging and pricing)

The first portal of experience for a law firm is either the website or the receptionist.

Consider a true life experience.

In researching for an article for a business journal, several law firms were called and asked a simple question.

“Hi, My wife and I have a child with a disability. I am calling to find out how much it will cost for a special needs revocable trust (RLT).”

At one office, the receptionist said that my family would need to come in and speak to the attorney. She said that an initial interview will cost $100. So I asked again if it would be possible to get the price on just a RLT.

The receptionist said that depending on what my needs would be, the price could vary.

This was rather simple. We need a general durable power of attorney for both of us. A durable power of attorney for health care for both of us. A living will times 2 and a pour over will for both of us. We want to name two successor trustees and who would care for our child if we should both die before our child does.

Since we have two properties, we will need a quit claim deed renaming them into the trust. My wife, a Realtor, is able to care for this.

We would fund the trust ourselves.

So, how much.

The response was that it would cost $100.

You mean, it will cost $100 to find out how much it costs to have the attorney do work for me. This is an incredible business model. Needless to say, this law office did not make it into the article reviewing (read: free advertising for law firms) written for the health section of the business journal.

Of the off line research, the smaller offices were much more user friendly. All had pricing and price ranges for the various products asked for. These offices were found using the Yellow Pages advertisements.

None of the offices had anything more than a yellow-page style website. When it comes to advertising for law firms, more than just a website will be needed.

Now, imagine a website that is built by or with a law practice owner or even several partners having their hands involved in the process. The hands on approach to advertising for law firms will always win over paying the experts. People who want your services want to connect with you first. Using website advertising for law firms makes this possible.

As part of the website, you inform people that just having a trust is not enough. It needs to be funded. What does that mean. Well, unless it is funded, it is of no value. So trying to protect your assets so that your child will be taken care of in later life will not happen.

What about other aspects of your law practice. If you are a part of building the website, you can aim at your target market with laser accuracy.

So when I type in Special Needs Trust and my local town, who do you think will come up. Likewise wills, real estate law, or what ever else you do, the keywords get the visitors to the site. You can make it as wide or as narrow as you like.

What you put on the site about the keywords is what gets the people into your office so you can start serving them. Your words establish your expertise and begin the experience of the future client for your office.

DIY Advertising for Law Firms

What if you do it yourself? Can you devote about 30 hours to get an education.

No worry, no hassle and no HTML (computer language). Well, a very tiny bit but only if you want.

In addition to the 30 hours of learning, it will take about 80 hours to build the first 30 pages of your site (based on the our experience).

Even if you have your staff build the site (which you can easily teach them how) you will be able to make a site that will sell.

The marketing skills you will learn for online website marketing will easily transfer to off line, brick and mortar law firm marketing.

In doing an experiment, using online selling techniques, I was able to become the top salesman in my company. Instead of making the required 20 cold calls a day, I sat at home and mailed out letters to 50 people. As the process continued, it ended up being only 20 and finally about 8 people purchased the product, costing $3200.

This was one of the processes we teach at Assist2web. It was using online sales techniques, only doing it through the snail mail rather than e-mail. The advantage of e-mail is that it would have saved about $250 in postage costs. The company I worked for was not very web savvy either.

The reason this works is because, like the Harris Poll indicates, you can create a personal experience that will grow into a relationship by building a law firm website.

Law Firm Website

Is a Do it yourself website in your future?

Consider it in terms of ROI or return on investment.

One business pays out over $5000 a month for his advertising campaign. This is how he gets people to click on his website.

The problem: it is like rented traffic. He does not own the traffic. Had he invested about 100 hours and learned how the web works, he would be getting naturally all the traffic that is coming to his site that he is paying for. Now, consider how many billable hours that have to be worked to make the 5K. His ROI on that 5K is about 5K. His profit is in repeat business.

For 100 hours now, he could be saving $5K a month in the future.
