I did learn a few lessons with the first sign. What's in a Name? If your domain name is "An-Incredibly-Long-Domain-Name.com, then this will not work for you. Your name has to be easy to remember and spell. So, in the case of Speechmastery.com, it is simple. With my art site, JonathanSteele-Artwork-Gallery.com, there is no way anyone would remember it or even get it right. So, to ensure getting the traffic, JonathanSteeleWorks.com is a secondary domain name I use. This name, parked, is simply redirected to the site. Now, on business cards and signs, it is easy to remember and write. If you have a long or hard name, try to get a redirected name that will say what you do and be easy to remember. The Sign I am amazed at how many people who will want a sign with beautiful quill script lettering. Some still want the now ancient Old English. The problem with decorative scripts when using them for signs, the only people that will be pleased with them is you. If you want a sign that people will be able to see and easily remember, it needs to be a simple letter. SansSerif letters are best for starters. Serifs are the little legs and tails on fancy letters. They look great on legal office and banking signs. However, for a passenger driving past you at 90 miles per hour, it needs to be simple and easy to read. Simply ask yourself, do I want to please myself or do I want traffic. If you want traffic, trash any ideas of fancy. Plane Jane will do more for you than anything. The Color As to color, this depends on a lot of things. For me, basic white works best. There are 1000 shades of white that the human eye can distinguish. This will give you a lot of color choices, so long as it is white. Showing off my sign to a friend, it turned out he already had one for his business. The only problem, his letters were about 1 1/2 inches tall, red and very thin lined. Even standing behind his truck, on a dark night, it was nearly impossible to see the sign. In the day time, it could only be seen when the light was right. Less is More One of my website customers had his own sign making machine. He loaded up the back of his van with all the things he did. Driving down the road, reading his sign was like reading a book. Psychologically, saying... "We Are Everything Widgits" will pull more traffic than... "We paint, fold, spindle, stack, sell, buy, trade, fix, repair, import, export, consult, and otherwise do anything else you can imagine with widgits." If you add any words, make them simple and readable within 2 seconds. This means no more than 2-4 words. Size Matters If your going with the glass sign so that you can remove it and not worry about it being stolen, there are some extra considerations. My sign shop did not give me very good guidance on this. When asking the size for distance, they new the numbers. However there was a factor that we did not consider. The window is on an angle. This means the letters from behind are smaller than what I picked. Have the sign shop do a paper mock up, tape it to the window and view it from behind. Signs, Law and Order In New York, some parkways do not allow commercial vehicles. This could mean no signs in your car. Other states may have requirements on window signs.
