Creative Website Writing: The Rules and the Tools

or How to Write in the Right Way for Your Visitors and for You

Creative website writing or internet copy writing is one of the essential ways of providing information for both visitors.

Human visitors who have a job to be done that websites provide solutions for. And the Web Spiders who rank your site based on content, how it is optimized, how many humans come, how many pages they view and how long they stay.

Think about it. You are writing first and foremost for the humans who will visit your pages. The more pages they see, the longer they stay the better for everyone.

The good news, you do not have to be able to write the Great American Novel. Creative website writing is much different than writing for books or magazines. Vastly different.

Creative Website Writing Rules

One sentence paragraphs are acceptable. None should be longer than three sentences.

Best if the sentences are short and to the point.

There are actual rules of how pages should be written to be compliant with proper web design. More on that later.

Writing Style

Exposition involves informing, explaining, describing, or defining the subject.

Narration involves storytelling and is most often used when a time line is involved.

Argumentation is also known as persuasive writing.

Description involves appealing to the senses within the writing.

There are other divisions of style. They all may involve a single form or a mixture of styles.

What ever style used, make it as though you are talking to someone right now in the present. Make the story as if your living the story in the present, even if it was past. Write as though you are talking to someone in the present.

The Inverted Pyramid

Unlike books and magazines, web writing is for scan reading. Put the most important at the beginning and the details at the end. This way the reader need only read the first sentence of each paragraph to get the basic information.

How Many Words

Generally speaking the guidelines you will read place the number between 350 to 1200 words. However, depending on topic and website design, the lower number is best. Then if more information is needed, create a second page focusing on a related keyword.

If it is on target for the job the reader has to do, then they will keep reading deeper and deeper into your site.

There are a few other things to add to your writing. Check out this site to learn more. We hope to create an internet copy writing resource for website writing. Next check out the tools you will need.

Thirty Tools for Creative Website Writing

The author makes an interesting point at the end of the thirty tools. He says they are tools, not rules.

What is Your Creative Style

People often will say that they do not feel they are creative. My disagreement with that declaration comes from the Steve Martin Book, Cruel Shoes. In the book he describes the daily art created by the family Bohemians. Mom creates beautiful pictures of white circles with smaller yellow spots in the middle. Some days she creates more abstract yellow and white pictures.

Dad creates white billowy cloud like sculptures in the bathroom sink. Each is speckled with small black dots.

Even baby creates. On white cotton canvas, the baby creates brown splotches that would make Rorschach art look amateurish.

As if looking for perfection, each is destroyed or thrown away to start all over again another day.

We all have the capability to create. We only need to learn how to tap into that creativity.
