What’s In a Domain Name SEO?

A domain name that both describes your business, possibly has your name in it and includes a term searched by the engines is a win win proposition.

As mentioned earlier, nobody is looking for you unless your famous. In order to get your domain to hit the radar of the search engines, it is necessary to include keywords that are highly searched and there is not a lot of competition for.

OK, this domain name seo thing is do as I say and not as I do. This rule was not followed by Assist2web. However this is for a few good reasons.

Being brand-able was more important than a long hard to remember name.

Also, as a scientist, I love experiments and this site is built on a theory. The theory is that there are enough people like those who visit here who will be find this so helpful, like cream, it will float to the top of the search engine milk.

My goal is to reach people just like you (if this is why your here) who want 'do it yourself' web site building.

So although a broad niche (a tight niche would just be SEO), my goal is to provide all the basic information that will be needed to have web success. The goal is to provide it all in one place.

How are we doing as far as our own SEO goes?

Check out www.Assist2web.com Alexa Rank to see how I am doing and check out the rank of my site. It is still up and down but it continues overall to grow in popularity. If you don't know about this, you can click on the picture of my site and come right back here.

You should know that if you do, this also will help my SEO. If you read between the lines, it will do the same for you when the time is right.

What You Need To Do for Domain Name SEO

With a niche found and a site concept in place, the next step is domain name optimization.

Try to find a name that describes what you do or what you are. Simple and easy to remember are key. Although Assist2web is catchy, off line people have to be told to use the number 2.

A win win is when your domain name is your web site name. Since this is not often possible, it becomes necessary to do some creative thinking.

List all the words about what you do.

Case Study For Speechmastery.com, the keyword speech was not as great a search term as the keyword public speaking in terms of searches. The problem was that there was no combination of words that were short and sweet.

The compromise paid off in brand-ability. With continued SEO work, my site is steadily heading toward the top 100k on Alexa.

So with a search term related to public speaking that said what it was I do, it was possible to rank high in the search engines.

Check out www.Speechmastery.com Alexa Rank and see the current rank of one of my other sites. It is still up and down but it continues in overall growth in popularity.

Once you have a set of words for possible domain names, do a keyword search. Pick the term that has the most searches balanced with brand-ability and ease of remembering.

Too short is too hard to remember. WIAN.com is not as easy to remember as WhatsInaName.com

What ever you choose, it should make sense and be to the point.

There is an exception. Acronyms are easy to remember. Many have become words. For instance, scuba: self-contained underwater breathing apparatus is now a word.

If your website lends to an acronym, you win.

Speaking of .com, studies show that .com is the easiest to remember.

Your not done yet. There is still one more step for picking your name. You need to consider the legalities. Does someone own it already? Even if it is not owned yet, is it trademarked.

One of my students had a name she really wanted. Turns out it was a registered trademark even though there was no website yet. Domain name SEO can be exciting and draining. Master the domain name SEO and you can win in the race for the visitor.

The Power of Two Name SEO

There are two possible names for your site. One is an online name that can be found by the search engines and one that is easy for people to remember.

True Example: BusinessBarter
TradeExchange.com was secured to be found by the search engines when someone types in any of the combination of keywords. Since it would be hard to remember and long to spell out, a second name was secured for business cards and advertising.

The second name is Business2Barter.com which is easy to spell out and type in.

The second domain name is redirected to the home page of the first. This way, anyone who types in the name from a business card will end up at the domain name seo website.
