The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Email List Spam

  • People arrive at your web site and give their e-mail addresses in order to get your newsletter. Maybe they even sign up to get a free e-book in addition to an e-zine or news letter. You will respond with a mass mailing.

The Good. Way to go. It can be improved on however. This is just as essential as not sending spam.

They want a newsletter or e-zine, and maybe a free e-book. You send it. They get what they expected. Whether it is the latest news, posts, or product offerings, if you only give what they ask for, you should be safe. However, to make it even better, use a e-mail service to do this for you. If your serious about running a business on the web, this is essential.

There are rules as to how many can be sent per hour. Any serious list will take more time to manage that you will be able to handle. You need a company to do it for you.

  • You are a vendor at a trade show. You have a sign up sheet that says specifically, sign up for our news letter, usually across the top and in big letters.

Or you have a fish bowl. It has a sign that says drop your card in to get on our mailing list for our newsletter.

The Good. It does not get much better.

They gave you their info for you to show what information you have to offer. Remember to include where you met, how you got their card and for best results, a question that you left with all the visitors to answer in your e-mail to them. Be sure to be prompt. According to Exhibitor Magazine, this is one of the greatest failings of sales people who use this venue.

To best protect yourself, take a picture, print and file it just in case.

  • What about a free lunch and a free news letter? On the fish bowl you put that they are both getting a free news letter and one of the subscribers will be drawn out for a free lunch.

The Good. Excellent. Not only should this provide a bunch of prospect e-mail addresses, this is better. The subscribers have to stay on the list to get the free lunch.

In spite of what the science says, many are avoiding the free lunch in favor of free information. It narrows down the reason they are subscribing and you end up with a more focused target market. Remember, get a picture. It is easy to say there was a sign. It is a little harder to disprove a photo of you standing next to the copy. Make it a close up so the sign can be read.

Does Good get any better? Yes it does. It is called Double Opt in. More on this later.

This is only the Good of how to avoid email list spam liability. Next consider the Bad of internet spam and email.

The Bad What could be considered spam? The answer may surprise you.
