Internet Copywriting Resource

Your internet copywriting resource toolbox, the place to learn DIY website copywriting.

At the bottom are some must read books. They are free to download.

To learn copy writing for website content, consider how an enterprising writer wannabe found a solution that can work for anyone. Standing on the beach, the literary equivalent to a 98 pound weakling, he decided to make a change. Guys kicking copies of Byron and Poe in his face, he determined in his mind to learn to hold his own against them. Knowing he would never write a great American novel, he determined to learn literary jujitsu.

Jujitsu is a martial art that has the philosophy of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it.

Literary jujitsu uses the readers mental energy against him rather than opposing it.

What is that energy? How does it get used against the reader? Can this be learned?

You can learn, even master printed page jujitsu. It is simple if you know the rules.

The first rule is give fun, interesting, information in a format that is easy to read and mentally engaging.

Why People Read

To use a readers mental energy against themselves, answer the question, why do people read? After all. the end result of copy writing for website creation is reading. People usually come to the web for information. They have a job to be done and they want information on how to accomplish that job. Yet, there is more.

That job usually involves more than just perusing the information you provide. When was the last time a technical journal was listed on the New York Times Best seller list. In addition to information readers want to be able to meet other needs.

Often times a most basic need, to be able to scan read your copy. People are in a hurry. They have little time. Additionally they want to be entertained, informed or engaged. They want to be enlightened by each and every page. They do not to read the same dribble they can read anywhere else. So by using jujitsu, taking the energy of the reader and using it against them, you can fulfill their needs.

That is exactly what our hero mentioned at the start did in his writing.

The web paragraph style is much simpler than typical writing. The writing style is as if you were talking. Otherwise, good writing rules rule. Kill the adjective. Avoid the to be verbs. Try to tell a story rather than a lecture on information.

Website copywriting follows some other simple rules.

Paragraph Style

Website copywriting is different than writing for the great American novel. One sentence paragraphs are acceptable. No sentence should be longer than three sentences. Each sentence should be no longer than 15 words.

Typically an inverse pyramid style is best. Tell the most important part first, then the middle section can explain the main points. Finally, the bottom expands on the information.

Next consider the use of adjectives and then the use of verbs. Get this wrong and lose your reader. Get it right and get the click or get the conversion.
