How to Prevent Being Part of the Problem

On the topic of internet spam and email, there are few things that can get you in deeper trouble faster that a spam violation. Other legal infractions take time to pursue. The trouble can happen much faster.

Do you know what you can and cannot do when it comes to email? Here are a few considerations on email list spam and how to avoid being guilty of it.

Internet Spam and Email

  • You purchase a list of leads. They may even be called opt-in leads. Your assured they are warm bodied business opportunity seekers. You are assured it is OK to send them e-mails. Can you? Should you?

The Bad If you do, you should know it is considered Spam

We hope you didn’t buy the list. If you did, it will be illegal to use and it could get you banned from your web host or which ever service a complaint is filed to. Do it legally.Unfortunately, internet spam and email can be a ready made scam.

How will you prove that they truly opted in? A canceled check will probably not hold up in a court of law. In a world where you can be found guilty of innocent copyright infringement, why take the chance. Do it right.

  • You meet Sharon at a speed networking meeting. You say that she would make a great power partner since she is in real-estate and your a banker. As part of the meeting, everyone swaps business cards automatically.

The purpose for swapping cards is for everyone to network with everyone else. Is it OK to plug Sharon into your e-mail campaign. After all, your campaign is about splorks and every Realtor in the world should be interested in splorks, splorking, and how to splork.

The Bad No matter how you slice, rotisserie grill, or dice it, it is spam. Please note, rotisserie grilled splork is very tasty, as I understand.

In order to add Sharon to your list you will need to ask her permission. She gave your her card as you did with yours for the purpose of networking should either have a need in the industry. That does not give you the right to pitch her on something via your e-mail campaign.

To resolve this, just ask Sharon if you can put her on your Splork Mailing. Chances are she does not know what a Splork is so all the more reason she needs your mailing.

Then write on the back of her card....ADD or Don’t ADD. When you write it just say out loud, 'I am putting you on my list." It is added insurance. On returning to your office date and file the card just in case.

  • You thought there was no such thing as a free lunch so when people drop their business card in the fish bowl for later drawing, you should be able to fish out some names to your e-mail list.

The Bad There may be free lunches from time to time but there are no shortcuts to building a list. This is SPAM and could get you a big fat BAN from your web host or e-Mail handler.

The reason for putting a card in the pot was for the free lunch. They probably put it in there thinking there was no such thing as a free lunch and wanted to prove it. If they received your e-mail campaign instead of a free lunch, they might be steamed enough to report you, in which case your goose will be cooked. You only want people who are actually interested in what you offer, not one or a hundred who are not. It wastes both of your time.
