Thank you and now, back to the page you came for.

What does MSN optimization and fresh produce have in common? Both are desirable to the consumer or end user. They are both also desirable to bugs as well. The bug were concerned with is the one on the internet.

Your DIY website is not just consumed by your visitors. There is a spider that will regularly visit and consume your fresh site. If you give it what it wants then you will improve your MSN results.

Using basic best practice you can achieve great results.

What is fresh to MSN. Anything that has been updated. How often is not known for sure. Anything from 1999 will probably not fulfill the freshness test in most cases.

Please note, this MSN optimization information is part theoretical and part MSN based.

In simplest terms, optimization is dependent on freshness, accuracy and quality.

This means to rank highly on MSN you need to do three things.

  • Update pages possibly as much as monthly
  • Make sure the coding is complete and correct
  • Create quality focused content

In some parts of the world if you optimize MSN you will reap a rich reward. This is because of the explosive growth of MSN in some geographical areas. MSN is the number one search engine.

MSN Optimization

You can go straight to MSN Help on this topic.

General Guidelines

  • HTML needs to be accurate and appropriate
  • Links need to work
  • Page moves should have redirected URL’s even if temporary
  • URL’s need to be simple
  • Avoid frequent changes
  • Content Gidelines

  • Create valuable content that keeps people coming back
  • Use the words that would be used as search query terms in the content
  • Limit pages to a reasonable size (a page with no pictures would be under 150KB)
  • Only one topic per page
  • Each page should be accessible by at least one live text link.
  • Do not put text you want indexed inside images or graphics
  • Add a site map
  • Keep the site to three tiers. No page more than three clicks from home page.
  • To MSN, freshness would also mean content fits your sites description. Although purple catchup is interesting and desirable to kids, it is just a bit hard to swallow for an adult.

It means harmonizing with your keyword strategy. So each and every keyword focused page on Assist2web.com somehow relate to DIY website building. Each page of your site should have only one main keyword as your theme and any other keywords for that page should be relate to that theme.

So on Assist2web.com the theme of this page is MSN optimization. Although Yahoo optimization is related, it is not close enough to the theme. Unless they were identical which they are not, it is another topic.

NoteFreshness will benefit you on Yahoo but in ways other than page rank.

In the extreme, it would be hard to somehow make relevant a page on a really cool remedy for sore throats.

Now right click on your mouse. Click on view source. Read down and you will see the keywords used for just this page.

You will notice a keyword density of about seven main keywords for every hundred words. This is not just for MSN SEO but also for any web page building.

    The Dilemma

We discourage tweaking pages. However, as your skills improve you will notice things you can improve on.

Maybe the headline, the flow or even length of a page. I am still breaking down pages into smaller pages from my Speechmastery.com site. The result for the visitor, instead of 2 page views, it has been as high as 14. These changes are refreshing for the spiders.

So freshen up your site wisely. Not on a whim. Other wise it could hurt you with the other search engines.

Another way to make a site fresh is adding new content. Continuously. Forever.

Here is the problem. Spiders only look at about 240 pages and then look no farther.

To keep it fresh and only after you get to the 100 page minimum and 200 is better, then put up a blog.

There will be a lot of work. The rewards will be great. It will only benefit the site when it is close to completed.

Get this down before you start to try to make money and you will do better. MSN Optimization is only part of the work you have to do. There are still the other three main players.
