You could be a victim and not even know. There is a very special kind of internet spam that only gets circulated to web site owners. Funny but it is really not spam. It is link orphan so to speak. An orphan link is a real link but the page is an orphan. You cannot access the link from the home page. You can only access the link from the link. They are of no value. According to Wikipedia, potted meat is a method of meat preservation. It has a long shelf life because it is precooked. It usually is made from mechanically separated meat. This is a perfect description of what I am being hit with in the name of link exchange. Here is how the orphan link potted meat scam works. Unsuspecting web site owners hire a “web guy” to juice up their site. Web Guy says, “You got to have links.” Once sold on the wonderful things that can be done in the name of the web, the crafty little meat separators go to work making their orphan link potted internet meat. The meat is the web site link. There is a separation process that takes place. So I get an email from the web guy. He sent it via the submission box so I did not get bent out of shape. However the page is not linked to from the home page, tier two page or even a tier three page. It is hanging out in hyper-space. These are as good as dead links. The only way to get to it is by typing in and click on the url. So, you link to his home page, send some of your traffic to him and he in turn gives you a wonderful contextual link that is only seen by the 31 other unsuspecting victims. Besides, who checks these things once they are up and done. Like potted meat, they can last forever. There you have it. He has potted his link to you, stripped all of the meat out of the link and you send him a fresh, live link from your site to his. Internet Orphan Link Potted Meat, looks, smells even feels like but is not Spam. How can you know. Check out all of the sites that link to you. Can you find your site on theirs by looking from the home page? If not, it may just be potted meat.
