What is Your Purpose

It has been said that plans may change but a purpose remains the same.

Careers, family and causes are all elements of what drives peoples lives.

Some philosophies hold that because of being endowed with free choice, some live with out a defining motivation in life.

If you have a reason or motivation other than just making barrels of money or getting rich, then this may be for you.

Some of my students (at the college) want to build nest eggs. Others want to take charge of their retirement years and not depend on Social Security to provide their income. One student to be the industry leader for his market segment which was helping homeowners (and he is well on his way).

• Work at home mom

• Work at home because of the shorter commute
• Freedom
• To finance fulfillment of their life list of things to do and etc....

Both my customers and students in my community college class get asked this question before being taken on as customers or students.

Defining yours will help you to focus on what the most important thing in life is. Plans may change but a purpose will remain the same.

If yours is to get rich, well, this is not the right web site for you. Getting rich is an inherently self centered purpose. Those pursuing it never reach it because they can never have enough. Many of the mega wealthy I have known or worked for will tell you how they loose sleep over worrying about how people are trying to take their money from them.

Having a purpose will...

• Keep you motivated
• Define your intention
• Maintain objectivity
• Strengthen your determination
• Mmaintain your resolve

Start defining yours by creating a vision and mission statement. Some office programs have a built in vision and mission builder.

Anecdotal evidence shows that both personal and business success are dependent on how well these principles are defined and lived up to.

Why Create One

Creating a Mission and vision will create a touch stone or proving stone against which to make decisions.

Let me illustrate. Having been self employed most of my life, the time came when working for others became appealing. The criteria was finding a job where all that would be required was a pencil or pen and my brain. Finding this job was the mission.

In sharing it with a couple of friends a book, What Color is Your Parachute was recommended. This would not have happened had it not been for the mission statement. Reading that book lead me to a nursing career (Ok, there was a compromise in the form of a stethoscope).

Continuing education lead to the realization that it was time to create a new mission.

This time, the mission was to create a business as opposed to being self employed.

There is a big difference.

Your self employment income is dependent on going to work every day. A business makes you money even when you are on vacation. It is always working.

A business also takes time to build. It is not realistic or reasonable to think it is possible to create one over night.
