Guest Lists and Fellow Employees Lists and Spam

This is the last of our spam examples.

  • On one of my art sites there is a Guest Sign in form. The Blog guest list requires an e-mail address to post. My free lecture on the internet business building class at the local community college requires people to give their e-mail addresses. Can they be put on my mailing list?

The Bad Nothing will put off your visitors faster than trying to sell them something if that is not why they came to you in the first place. In my case, it could even mean the loss of my teaching position.

Never send them anything other than a thank you or information that they requested. In the class it is contractually wrong for me to pitch anything during the class. Although I could do so after, it is bad form. My students are there to learn, not as my customers.

Again, the only way to introduce them, and even then it would be used cautiously, add a signature where they could opt-in. In the case of the school, to avoid the students talking about and or asking for anything else I could do during class hours, they would not even be offered. One upset student could ruin my ability to teach. So even though you could, you might not want to.

  • Once I was the lead person on a Research and Development group. At any given time I might be running two or three different projects.

There would always be schedule changes and more pressing matters that had to be attended, meaning some projects had to be put on hold till the crisis was cared for. Surely I could send them an e-mail telling them of the changes in the schedule or in the details of the project. This is a question about a fellow employee list.

The Bad Technically, it is possible that without permission, you could get into trouble. If information is going to be sent, they need to ask you to send it. Regardless of company policy and procedure, a complaint, whether from a co-worker or anyone else. Even if they did not mean to get you into trouble, it will be too late. The cat will be out of the bag. Not only will you be in trouble, the company who hosts the e-mail account will likewise create problems for the employer.

Always get permission of each member of the group, team, or office before you send out a mass mailing. To be safe, some like to get a hard copy of the permission statement to protect from any internet spam and email accusations.

Always make sure that you check your service provider for their terms of service regarding internet spam and email list use.
