Website Headers: The Requirements

The top image should be about 725 pixels wide. This is a size that will open fully in the smallest full size screen.

The height should be not more than 120 pixels and 70 pixels high would be ideal.

Some websites have used really tall headers effectively. Others have used minimalist headers and have found them to be effective.

Which ever way you choose to go, remember that the space the header takes up is your web real estate. The space above the fold is the most important to capture the attention of your visitor. You only have seconds to capture their attention.

The header should have the name of the website. Current chic is to have the name with out the .com following the name, assuming your site is a dot com.

The headline should also have a combination of target audience, problem and solution.

It is not always necessary to have the headline but it will help your website to convert visitors to consumers of your site.

Here is the evolution of a site header. The original concept was created using only cut and paste pictures from an Olympus camera edited on a Mac. The final copy was cleaned up by Elliot Truelove using Photoshop. Features like the shading to the letters and the window box around the photo were added by Elliot.
